In 2018, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court – including Justices Donohue, Dougherty, and Wecht – vanquished blobby, unconstitutional Republican-drawn congressional districts. Their ruling supported free and equal voting across the commonwealth.

Remember “The Blob?” The 1958 version with Steve McQueen? Right here in Chester County, the blob consumed the Downingtown Diner. Then it famously stretched its blobby tendrils from the projection booth of Phoenixville’s Colonial Theater, seeking teenage moviegoers to consume. Perhaps inspired by the movie, Republican legislators crafted blobby congressional districts across PA, including our own District 6. By 2016, District 6’s tendrils extended to Chester, Montgomery, Berks, and Lancaster Counties in search of Republican voters.

Republicans drew partisan, gerrymandered and blobbified congressional districts across PA. In 2016 they captured 72% (13) of the 18 congressional seats with only 54% of the vote.
In the 2018 ruling on “League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania”, the PA Supreme Court vanquished the unconstitutional, blobby districts. They selected new district maps that best met the PA Constitution’s Free and Equal Elections Clause [Article I, Section 5]. Our own District 6 was redrawn to be far more compact, fair, and respectful of existing Chester and Berks County boundaries. In 2018 and 2020, Republicans and Democrats split Pennsylvania’s 18 congressional seats evenly. Each party captured 9.
