In our system of checks and balances, each branch of government is supposed to provide a check, or limitation, on the others. But with no constitutionally mandated qualifications to serve, and unlimited life terms, who checks the Supreme Court? As the Court has swung to the right they have made far reaching decisions that have changed America in frightening ways. The Court in recent years has allowed unlimited money in politics (Citizens United v. FEC) which has a corrupting influence on democracy. They have overturned Roe v. Wade with the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling, resulting in abortion being banned in 14 states and severely restricted in six others, and complete bans are currently being blocked by the courts in three more. They have undermined the fight against climate change (Chevron case) by limiting the power of the federal government to regulate polluters. Now the Court has declared that the President has full immunity for official acts, placing that office holder beyond the law’s reach. So who checks the Court now?

There is only one way, and that is to elect Kamala Harris to the office of President and Bob Casey to the Senate. A Democratic victory in November is critical to check the Court since there may be opportunities to nominate new Supreme Court judges in the next term. Without Democrats in office, the Court could cement its conservative majority for a generation or more. Remember it took nearly 60 years for the Court to overturn its decision that legalized racial segregation in America. We cannot afford to wait that long for change to come to the Court. Freedom of choice, protections for our environment, and equal justice for all are on the ballot this fall. Vote Democrat in November to check the Court!
